Freedom of speech is one of the most important rights we have in this country. And I’ve often stated that we forget too often that freedom of speech is not just protecting nice, pleasant, comfortable speech. It protects all speech, and especially protects mean, rude, inflammatory, insulting, degrading speech. Just because we don’t like what someone says doesn’t mean they aren’t allowed to say it.

Now, don’t get me wrong. What you say does have consequences. If you pull a Don Imus and call a bunch of black women “nappy-headed hos” and get kicked off the air for it, then that’s the consequence. Don Imus can call black women nappy-headed hos all day long, but it cost him his job. You can say whatever you want, but there can be consequences and you have to live with those consequences.

Here’s where I’m going with this. This year’s White House Correspondents Dinner featured comedian Wanda Sykes, and of course, Rush Limbaugh was mentioned. Check out this video to see what she had to say:

Notice Obama laughing uproariously.

Toby Harden, who was at the dinner, really sums it up the best:

There’s not much room for differing interpretations of what Sykes said. She called Limbaugh a terrorist and a traitor, suggested that he be tortured and wished him dead.

What was his crime? Hoping that Obama’s policies – which he views as socialist – will fail.

That’s way, way beyond reasoned debate or comedy and Obama’s reaction to it was astonishing.

Imagine if a comedian “joked” that Obama was a terrorist who was guilty of treason and should be tortured and allowed to die. There would justifiably be an outcry.

But when the “joke” comes from a liberal, Obama-supporting comedienne and the target is a right-winger then the likes of Hilary Rosen and Donna Brazile are on CNN saying it’s just comedy and Limbaugh is “fair game”.

And Obama laughing when someone wishes Limbaugh dead? Hard to take from the man who promised a new era of civility and elevated debate in Washington.

And yes, Obama laughed. He laughed and laughed and laughed. Classy guy, huh?

Look, Wanda Sykes has every right to say whatever she wants about Rush Limbaugh. That was the whole point of that free speech talk above. It doesn’t mean that we aren’t allowed to criticize her for it, or that she shouldn’t lose her job for it… if she even has a job. I can’t remember Wanda Sykes doing anything besides being Jane Fonda’s assistant in the movie Monster-In-Law.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama is the guy who promised civility in Washington. He promised class and bipartisanship. It was supposed to be the end of all of the hate we had. We were going to leave all of that behind, draw a new line in the sand, and move forward into a shiny, happy future. But liberals, of course, have not lost their anger. And I never believed for a second that we’d actually move on. The Americans who voted for Obama, though, apparently did.

And? Are you happy with your new President? Are you proud to have this classless idiot representing you? Are you pleased to hear him laughing at the talk of calling someone who politically disagrees with him a terrorist and a traitor, and then wishing he’d be tortured and die?

Is this the new, unifying, bipartisan President you were expecting?

Who was your favorite speaker at CPAC? And do you like pitbulls? I love all dogs, but I started doing pit rescue because all the bad press and treatment they got was unjustified.

I did not actually attend CPAC — just a quick disclaimer. But I think my favorite speaker was Rush Limbaugh. Jonathan Krohn was a close second though — he blew me away.

I’ve never actually owned a pit bull. I had a neighbor growing up who owned one, and that pit bull ripped the other dog she owned apart. Literally. The pit bull had to be put down because of it. So, that’s been my only experience with them. I’m well aware that the breed does not define the dog, though some breeds are just predisposed to be a little nastier — like Dalmations.

What exactly does Obama mean when he says he wants Washington to be more bipartisan? Well, it means that conservatives need to keep their damn mouths shut, give up all their principles, and happily go along with everything the Democrats do. Then, and only then, will you be lauded as “bipartisan”. Luckily, Barack Obama is giving us a handy two-step formula to get us on our way to being truly bipartisan.

Step one: stop listening to Rush Limbaugh.

President Obama warned Republicans on Capitol Hill today that they need to quit listening to radio king Rush Limbaugh if they want to get along with Democrats and the new administration.

“You can’t just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done,” he told top GOP leaders, whom he had invited to the White House to discuss his nearly $1 trillion stimulus package.

One White House official confirmed the comment but said he was simply trying to make a larger point about bipartisan efforts.

“There are big things that unify Republicans and Democrats,” the official said. “We shouldn’t let partisan politics derail what are very important things that need to get done.”

Step two: make sure we never forget that we lost.

In an exchange with Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) about the proposal, the president shot back: “I won,” according to aides briefed on the meeting.

“I will trump you on that.”

See? Don’t you wish you could be mature like Barack Obama? Don’t you wish you could have such deep and undying respect for the opinions of others even if you disagree, like Barack Obama does? And hey, it’s good for us right, because everyone knows that when conservatives start listening to Rush, we become mindless zombies who are incapable of doing anything besides standing there listlessly with blank stares on our faces, mindlessly moaning “GOD. GUNS. RUSH. GOD. GUNS. RUSH. GOD. GUNS. RUSH.” Actually getting work done is completely out of the question.

And hey, it’s all good. The Obamamessiah will save us from this nightmare, because we don’t know what’s good for us, after all. So here he comes with the Fairness Doctrine to save us from those mind control monsters like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.

It’s funny, too, because when Bush was in office, the cry we heard over and over again was that dissent was the highest form of patriotism.

Not when Barack Obama’s the President.

Unfortunately for President Obama, he’s intellectually out of his league. Rush hit him back with a zinger (emphasis mine).

There are two things going on here. One prong of the Great Unifier’s plan is to isolate elected Republicans from their voters and supporters by making the argument about me and not about his plan. He is hoping that these Republicans will also publicly denounce me and thus marginalize me. And who knows? Are ideological and philosophical ties enough to keep the GOP loyal to their voters? Meanwhile, the effort to foist all blame for this mess on the private sector continues unabated when most of the blame for this current debacle can be laid at the feet of the Congress and a couple of former presidents. And there is a strategic reason for this.

… To make the argument about me instead of his plan makes sense from his perspective. Obama’s plan would buy votes for the Democrat Party, in the same way FDR’s New Deal established majority power for 50 years of Democrat rule, and it would also simultaneously seriously damage any hope of future tax cuts. It would allow a majority of American voters to guarantee no taxes for themselves going forward. It would burden the private sector and put the public sector in permanent and firm control of the economy. Put simply, I believe his stimulus is aimed at re-establishing “eternal” power for the Democrat Party rather than stimulating the economy because anyone with a brain knows this is NOT how you stimulate the economy. If I can be made to serve as a distraction, then there is that much less time debating the merits of this TRILLION dollar debacle.

Obama was angry that Merrill Lynch used $1.2 million of TARP money to remodel an executive suite. Excuse me, but didn’t Merrill have to hire a decorator and contractor? Didn’t they have to buy the new furnishings? What’s the difference in that and Merrill loaning that money to a decorator, contractor and goods supplier to remodel Warren Buffet’s office? Either way, stimulus in the private sector occurs. Are we really at the point where the bad PR of Merrill getting a redecorated office in the process is reason to smear them? How much money will the Obamas spend redecorating the White House residence? Whose money will be spent? I have no problem with the Obamas redoing the place. It is tradition. 600 private jets flown by rich Democrats flew into the Inauguration. That’s fine but the auto execs using theirs is a crime? In both instances, the people on those jets arrived in Washington wanting something from Washington, not just good will.

The ball’s in Obama’s court now, but surely he’ll rise above this petty bipartisan politicizing of an economic crisis. Obama will save us, and all he asks in return is our unquestioning loyalty and devotion.

Unfortunately for Obama, us conservatives will probably just go on listening to Rush and thinking for ourselves.

In case you haven’t heard, the bidding for the Reid & Co. letter smearing Rush Limbaugh has just ended at a whopping $2,100,100.00. Over two million dollars — way to go, Rush!!

The media, of course, has been pretty much silent on this.

All of this money (and Rush is also going to match that sum) will be going to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Fund.. For those unfamiliar, here’s a little rundown from the MC-LEF’s website:

The recent war in Iraq has certainly illuminated America’s commitment to freedom. We are reminded that freedom is not free. The price is great. No one knows that better than the left-behind sons and daughters of America’s fallen heroes.

Through the continuous support of our donors, we have distributed aid with a value of more than $29,000,000.00 to eligible children. This assistance was primarily rendered to children of Marines or Federal law enforcement personnel who were killed on duty or died under extraordinary circumstances while serving our country at home or abroad. These funds enable us to provide these children with scholarships for their higher education. When a child of a United States Marine is afflicted with a physical or mental disability and requires special medical equipment or tutoring, our Foundation may grant financial assistance to that family if their personal insurance does not cover the complete cost of treatment for this child.

In addition to the regular program, our Foundation decided to support all American Forces and also Coalition Forces in the invasion of Iraq and taking of Baghdad from 3 March 2003 to 16 July 2003. In the past, the Foundation also included in our program the children who lost a parent from all agencies killed in the murderous attack on the Pentagon. We also decided to go back and give our bonds to children who lost a parent on the USS Cole; the children of the Air Force personnel killed at Khobar Towers; and, with great honor, the twelve children who lost their parent on the space shuttle Columbia disaster.

This assistance has had a positive, life-changing effect on many, many children. We are thankful for the commitment and support of our many members and volunteers. Because of their dedication, no administrative costs of any type are charged to our Foundation. One hundred percent of the donations received is used to fund programs for the children we serve.

The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation is certified as one of America’s Best Charities by Independent Charities of America.

Harry Reid has been droning about how he’s so proud to be part of this effort with Rush, even though they don’t agree on much. Rush has asked Reid and the other senators to match that number, as well — no response yet. Most of these senators are extremely wealthy, but I won’t hold my breath for them to put their money where their mouth is.

In any case, over $4 million is unbelievable. Congratulations, Rush Limbaugh, and thanks to whoever it was that was able to make that unbelievable bid!!

Freeper Pissant sent me an e-mail about this essay by Alexander Madison on Duncan Hunter, and why conservatives need to rally behind him (including Mr. Limbaugh).

Here’s an excerpt:

If Congressman and Presidential candidate Duncan Hunter had a dollar for every conservative who said “Gee, Hunter is really great, but he doesn’t have traction”, or, “Yeah, he may be the most conservative, but he can’t win”, the Hunter Campaign would be leading the 2008 money race. Alas, his campaign receives no money from folks who “really like” him, but think he can’t win. Just a “that’s too bad” or a “I wish he’d catch fire” or some equally tepid gesture.

Well, let me tell you, fellow conservatives, why this cannot and will not continue, and why the tide is starting to turn in Hunter’s favor. The “that’s too bad”s are changing to “what can I do to help?”s, as more and more folks are looking very hard at the world we face today and are beginning to evaluate who needs to lead the charge. This 2008 election is an argument for America’s soul. And the Republican primary is a referendum on the GOP’s future as a conservative party, not just a beauty pageant for politicians and their clever (consultant driven) ploys to sound like conservatives.

So my argument below addresses 3 key topics that definitively illustrate why all conservatives must climb aboard the Hunter bandwagon. The first two are about Mr. Hunter himself – his history and philosophy. The third topic is the much needed and long overdue comparison – how he stacks up against the other republican hopefuls. In addition, I will demonstrate that Hunter really does “have a chance” and how his ascension is the best thing to happen to the GOP since Ronald Wilson Reagan left the democrats and joined the party of Lincoln. And lastly, I will address the role of Mr. Limbaugh and his fellow talkers in this election cycle.
