Today we saw an epic upset. We saw a Massachusetts miracle. Scott Brown, a relatively unknown moderate Republican, took on Martha Coakley and the Democrat establishment, and won. Scott Brown won with almost no help from the national GOP. Martha Coakley lost with the Democratic Party behind her all the way, with even Barack Obama campaigning for her.
It wasn’t enough, and Scott Brown will be the next senator of Massachusetts. Martha Coakley thought it was the Ted Kennedy seat, that it belonged to the Democrats and to her. Scott Brown believed it was the people’s seat, and the people chose him instead of yet another big spending, politics-as-usual, corrupt Democratic politician. It didn’t help Coakley that she ran the worst campaign in I don’t even know how long, either.
This has changed everything. It will rock Democrats to their very core.
Just how shaken are they, though? I decided to do a little round up of the liberal reaction to Scott Brown’s win in Massachusetts, and… well, it ain’t pretty.
First up, even film critic Roger Ebert, who has nothing to do with politics whatsoever, decided to make a run for the “Best Sore Loser” award. Michelle has the screencap:

Next, I checked the comments over at the Huffington Post. Needless to say, they weren’t too happy either.
- kellym33: Yay! The party of teabags and Michael Steele and Sarah Palin wins Ted Kennedy’s seat. Mass voted in someone who’s only platform is to be sure to say no along with the rest of the repubs. I didn’t really think it possible to dumb down such a large population of a pretty enlightened state, guess I was wrong.
- oneputtsteven: To all the libs who stayed home in protest. Now you’ve done it. It’s going to be like the scene in Ghostbusters when all the demons and ghosts get released except all the damage will be REAL and it WON”T be funny.
- dollbaby: Make no doubt that this is the gist of what happenend today: This guy was funded by the tea party lobbtist and republicans (secretly). This was a big money play to shut down healthcare and the democratic agenda by insurance companies and corporate America.
- AlanPittsburgh: I think all you crazy rethugs are using THE math of Karl Rove when you start fortune-telling based on this election result.
- msgirlintn: It’s unbelieveable that the citizens of MA have elected a nude, Cosmo Centerfold, teabbager that thinks he is JFK to the same seat in the Senate where Jack and Teddy Kennedy sat. I realize that the Coakley camp ran a bad campaign. But the fair-weather dems that stayed home (or worse yet voted for Brown) because they didn’t get the perfect healthcare bill that they thought they should get. Nevermind your neighbor across the street has their perfect bill in mind also (and both perfect bills probably are not the same) By staying home you might as well have voted for Brown. Shame on you. Now all of the President’s agenda is going to be threatened a little more with a teabagger in the Senate. Congratulations. I hope you are really happy with the choice you made. ANd to the fair weather dems in other states, MA is a fine example of it could happen to you too.
- dokbob: Apparently, some people in Massachusetts swore a pact to the devil and the devil said “okay, it’s a deal.”
There were plenty more, including one commenter who — amazingly — complained that Scott Brown doesn’t have the “proper” Massachusetts dialect.
Of course, the HuffPos were better behaved than the DUmmies:
- BluDemocratGirl: F*ck the GOP, Ignorant Teabagging Fools, and the Independent Voters who stood up with that pathietic, porn star-wannabe bastard. Mrs. Coakley’s campaign could’ve been stronger, but she ran it down to the drain. I’m pissed ’cause now the health care reform is now in jeopardy!
- Joe the Liberal: It absolutely sickens me… to see this solid blue state have some sleazeball, degenerate, scumbag filth republican as their “representative”. I’m even more sickened and disgusted to see Ted’s seat, that he held for decades on end go to this piece of garbage, cookie cutter, bottom feeding, dirtbag republican.
- Odin2005: Another STOLEN election.
- Akoto: Teddy must be rolling in his grave right now.
- DainBramaged: All of you RePUKElican lurkers can go f*ck yourselves one race. F*ck you.You have NO F*CKING ONE to run against Obama in 2012 so go f*ck yourselves.
- AndyA: If sanity is a right wing, bigoted, homophobic Nazi, well…yes I guess there will be sanity. Pretty faces often hide monsters within.
- TwixVoy: They are chanting like Nazis at his victory rally. Chilling. A glimpse of things to come.
The Kossacks aren’t too thrilled about this, either.
- nutmeg: Repugs Will filibuster EVERYTHING just out of spite. That’s just who they are. Who can I see about getting the part of my brain that cares about politics lobotomized?
- MHB: What we’re witnessing is the product of a corrupt media and a dumb, distractable electorate. I’m not sure that anything can be done at this point, but one thing I am sure of is that continuing to operate on the premise that the majority of Americans are reasonable, intelligent people who will do the right thing if the facts are presented to them objectively is not going to work. I know that it’s not what most people who come to this site want to hear, but most Americans need to be manipulated into doing the right thing. Reasoning with them might be the morally correct thing to do, but is simply not going to get the job done.
- eXtina: Coakley should be ashamed of herself for allowing Ted Kennedy’s seat to go to not just a Republican, but a teabagger for God’s sake. What a tragic, tragic, ending to his 50 year legacy.
- berkshireblue: So true…MA is an educated state if the campaign SB ran worked here what does this say for the rest of the country. The guy had a completely undistinguished and ineffectual record in the state senate-all of his jobs were in the public sector (thought Repugs HATED that), he ran on being a regular, good looking truck driving guy a la Bush. He didn’t pretend to be smart, a la Palin. That it worked in MA tells me a lot about the average voter and it ain’t pretty.
- maxnyc: what a disgrace after that f*cking four days of truly sad mourning for ted that these assholes–in MA and the white house allowed this to happen! im so happy he is not here to see his legacy trashed by the election of this scum
- fasteddie9318: The real loser here was the entire country But, given how we’ve all allowed the pitchfork-wielding idiocracy to take the country over in the past year, we deserve it.
Like I said, Scott Brown’s victory has sent shockwaves through the Democratic party. It’s also fired up Republicans and independents. The repercussions from this race will be felt throughout the rest of the year, especially come election season. Democrats thought Massachusetts was bad?
Just wait until we take back California.

Nice collection of comments.
I love how when they lose a race, or argument, they resort to the foul language and name calling.
There is one comment above in particular I just have to comment to:
MHB: (snip) most Americans need to be manipulated into doing the right thing. Reasoning with them might be the morally correct thing to do, but is simply not going to get the job done.
I don’t want to join Kos just to reply to this so here is my response;
MHB, we have been manipulated and we are tired of it. If you think more manipulation will make it better, then I say go ahead and do it. The backlash will be unlike anything ever seen in modern politics.
Great job Cassy. Now we have them on the run and we must keep fighting til november 2010, and then november 2012. Palin 2012.
We will crush them in 2010, and then deliver the death blow in 2012 to this radical leftism.
Thanks Cassy. Those comments made this victory so much sweeter. I’m taking great delight in their misery.
You saved me the trouble of going to those websites. It also spread my browsing history from the pollution of their URLs.
Like you said, not pretty..
American Power tracked-back with, ‘More Sore Losers: Leftists Lash Out After Coakley Defeat’.
Wow.. I actually totally agree with a Kossack up there. MHB is talking about the election of Obama, right?
These comments: unbelievable un-sane unraveled. How like the tone deaf progressive to believe “we have to manipulate the ‘dumb’ electorate.” First Virginia now Massachusetts, life is good.
[...] Democrats are upset, and the liberal reaction is what one expects. [...]
What did you all expect? Liberals think emotionally, not rationally. I’ve been pointing this out for years, as well as many other commentators on the political scene. I’ve had first hand experience in disagreeing with a liberal. What I got back was nothing but personal attacks. Nothing about the issues. American voters in 2006 and 2008 gave liberals a chance. Now that everyone sees their true agenda, they’ll get voted out. This is not what the majority of Americans want.
Can we gloat a little bit now?…
Needless to say, the most commonly used word from the disappointed liberal commenters begins with an “f.” ……
Wow I love the moonbat reactions as they board their mothership.
Let’s hear it for Gridlock.
What’s really sad is that while reading the comments left by these Democrats, I didn’t really see that they were in touch with the real world. Oops, I guess I forgot who I was talking about. They sound like a bunch of children whining that they didn’t get their way. You just have to love how they keep calling Scott Brown a teabagger and saying that he was secretly funded by the Republicans. I guess the people posting this garbage don’t realize that the average joe is sick and tired of an oppressive government. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next election. If they are shocked now, just wait until the Democrats lose their shirts in the coming election!
Massachusetts gave Obama an anniversary present he deserved, and I must say that the cries coming from the left that you posted about make me smile.
It’s like Melinda P says, we’re dealing with people who have the emotional development of a five year old. They don’t get their way and a temper tantrum follows.
Wow ! What hateful, angry thoughts about the majority vote in Massachusetts. The arrogance comes from the liberals, not conservative/independent citizens. The history we made in Massachusetts was possible because ACORN and other corrupt entities weren’t involved in this special election. The power belongs to the collective voters that go to the voting booths casting a ballot based on confidence in the candidate’s ability to represent the voters. MASSACHUSETTS, we DID GOOD ! ! One uncorrupted senator from Massachusetts is heading for Washington ! Wooooooooooohoooooooo !
You see occasional voices of sanity from the left, but most of their reactions fall into one or more of the following categories:
1. This is a personal affront to Ted Kennedy. Apparently, in exchange for accepting the power, prestige, honor and privileges associated with being a United States senator, the people of Massachusetts owe it to him to never elect a Republican to that seat again. You would think that if the people were so pissed off at him, they might have expressed their rage by maybe voting him out of office, but apparently Occam’s Razor doesn’t apply in Massachusetts.
2. Brown won because Obama and the congressional Democrats weren’t liberal enough. If locking the opposition party out of the room and sending purple-shirted thugs to beat up your own constituents when they show up to ask you to stop what you’re doing is bipartisanship, I’d really hate to see what happens when they play hardball. Tactical nuclear strikes?
3. Republicans are EEEEEEEEEVILLLL. For an extreme example of this, see Andrew Sullivan. On second thought, don’t. It will just depress you. A lot of these people live in a bubble. They rarely if ever socialize with conservatives or libertarians, let alone attempt to engage them in any sort of meaningful dialog. The idea that there might be decent, intelligent, well-informed people who honestly believe that the Obama agenda is a bad idea is just unthinkable to them.
4. Coakley ran a terrible campaign. Okay, this one is true, but it overlooks the elephant in the room. This shouldn’t have been close enough for Coakley’s chokely to matter. Massachusetts has been reliably sending Kennedys to the Senate for decades. Hell, they’re still sending John Kerry to the Senate. Massachusetts is a blue state. They *want* to elect Democrats, even bad ones like Kerry.
People were pissed off because they weren’t willing to go as far as Obama wanted to lead them. This isn’t “spin”. It’s just the most simple and plausible explanation for why one of the bluest states in the country would send a Republican to replace Ted Kennedy in the Senate. Unless Occam’s Razor really doesn’t apply there.
I’m not sure if you’ve seen, but on the community section of Feministing, they’re trying to create outrage that Scott Brown posed naked years ago.
Surprise surprise, the liberal response to a clear victory is to demonize the opponent. I’ve never had a good debate with a lib. Whenever you corner them with those stubborn things called facts they’ll launch into personal attacks at someone who they think did something once that they heard was corrupt.. blah, blah, blah. My own kids today got into a conversation with classmates about how the presidents handling of the economy is hurting the country and the response of lib children was to call mine “racists.” I am a native american schoolteacher who views MLK as one of America’s heros. I’ve raised my kids to judge others just as he taught us, “not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” I’ve never heard any of his detractors say, or imply, that Obama’s race is a factor in their dislike of his policies and philosophy. It isn’t that he’s black, it’s that he doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing when it comes to the economy, budget, taxes, spending, foreign relations, defense, or terrorism.
PS I don’t give a rat’s arse what color he is. He could be purple with pink polka-dots. If he knew what he was doing and made any real progress in solving the nations problems, he have my support. The left uses his color as a tool to club as racist anyone who criticizes him. Lastly, note the classless, vile hate speech of the leftists as they spew venomous bile, rife with opinions, short on facts, and just barely coherent. They are like rotten kids who have no self control.
When socialists are angry, it makes me smile.
Whenever someone brings up skin color, I tell them they are changing the subject. Because, in essence, they are.
It gets them very angry when you point out how they are losing the argument.
So, the Moonbats are barking insanely. What else is new?
Thank God the majority of people in Massachusetts are actually “Americans.” There’s hope for this country yet.
From here on out, we obliterate the commies within. No quarter or accommodation. America will be unmistakeably Conservative again, as it has always been (with the exception of the last 20 years).
I love the smell of schadenfreude in January! I will love the smell of schadenfreude in November too!
This country required 3 decades to become this screwed up. President Obama has been in office for just 1 year. You all talk like little children (including the democrats comments). This period that we are now facing is a product of ‘The Reagan Revolution’.
Congress and the Senate seem to engineer very long bills (Health Care reform is over 2,000 pages). The bill’s become so long and so involved that even the people voting on them are uncertain what they are voting on.
I strongly believe that the people of the United states should demand ‘micro’ bills that may be easily understood and debated in an intelligent way by all concerned. An example of this would be, the health care bill could have been split into smaller bills that each would have to be self-supporting and practical. Maybe health care reform could have (or be) been broken down to:
1. Corruption in the health care community.
2. Tort reform to aid Doctors.
3. Method of administration (public option? network? nothing at all?)
4. Where will this funding come from.
etc………
This would make the bills much more manageable and easier for the average person to understand and make a rational decision. This would also slow the congress and Senate when attempting to add ‘pork’ to these bills.
I am registered as an unaffiliated. I cringe as much when I read liberal material as I do when I read conservative. I have found that BOTH parties have good ideas. My belief is that at least 95% of Democrats and Republicans are well intentioned and very decent people.
It seems as though, the 5% or so of BOTH parties are going to have their way or no way. The politicians in general should be working towards improving this country for “We the People”. This never seems to happen.
I have been listening to the same clap-trap since the 1960′s. The hard core conservative would like to take the criminals out behind the court house and shoot them and the radical liberals would like to place the 10-time serial killers on probation (and possibly work release). It’s almost as if one group tries to out-stupid the other.
I’m not sure what the answer is, I am however, certain that we need to work smarter and together, if we wish to move this country forward. This country MUST move forward or the Chinese will become a ‘Super Japan’ economically and we will no longer be in a position to choose. One thing is for sure, nothing will be accomplished by either party until the hatred and anger stops. Just my own personal thoughts about the matter.
“I’m not sure what the answer is”
But you’re more than willing to come on here and badmouth us. Sounds good…
“I am however, certain that we need to work smarter and together, if we wish to move this country forward.”
Ah yes, the “if we only come together under the Dear Leader, His Messiahness Obama, we’ll live in utopia” argument. The reason why we have a democracy is that we’re supposed to have disagreement. If we didn’t, well, we’d live in a dictatorship, wouldn’t we?
“This country MUST move forward or the Chinese will become a ‘Super Japan’ economically and we will no longer be in a position to choose.”
Ah, but in what direction? One where the government will be in complete control of everything or one where private enterprise is still available? As for the Chinese, my belief is that the “choice” of electing Democrats will hasten their ascendence into superpower status.
“One thing is for sure, nothing will be accomplished by either party until the hatred and anger stops.”
Well, I can’t say I “hate” Democrats/leftists, but I don’t really like them. Of course, part of that might be stuff that I overhear about us conservatives being subhuman or put into concentration camps because of our beliefs. Yeah, stuff like that kinda puts a dampener on the whole ‘peace, love, dope’ thing.
“One thing is for sure, nothing will be accomplished by either party until the hatred and anger stops.”
I don’t have a lot of patience for this “can’t we all just get along” crap.
No, we can’t. As the other guy just said to you, this is what democracy looks like. You don’t like knock-down, drag-out fights in Congress and among the electorate over defense, taxes, social policy, education, energy, and the environment? Too bad.
Move to Venezuela where Chavez is busy putting the kibosh on every flicker of dissent.
Besides that, I don’t think for a minute that the Left really believes in all that “reconciliation” crap. If they did, they’d lead by example, but as the comments Cassy quoted demonstrate, they’re a bunch of whiny, vulgar, immature little morons.
And Mace, you so-called “moderates” are just as bad. At least the Left has something it’s willing to fight for and get exercised about. You linguini-spined yaps in the middle are equally deserving of my contempt.
