I think it stems from a basic, irrational, deep-seated fear of life: libs believe that America is a heartless, wicked country run by sinister, pitiless rich people and corporations against whom "common" people have no chance (see, for example, Algore's 2000 nomination acceptance speech). We don't have free health care! Oil companies and pharmaceutical companies are getting rich! We don't have free college education! We don't have wind farms and magic cars that don't burn gasoline! We're destroying the planet! Libs who buy into this bunk feel the need for a champion to save them (and the rest of us). Well! What champion is ever less to his believers than a superman, a near god-like being? (And since many libs don't believe in God, it's easy for them to ascribe divinity to a person). Lib leaders, who themselves are the sort of selfish, grasping cynics who they claim are oppressing the American people, play on this fear and need for a champion to convince their pathetic followers that their candidate is not a man with (many different) positions and a platform that can and should be analyzed. Rather, he's a genius, a messiah, a "light worker" who is to be followed without question. All you have to do is have the audacity to hope for change we can believe in... just click your heels three times and say, "There's nobody like Obama! There's nobody like Obama!"
